The AES Atlanta 17th Annual Student Workshop took place from 9am-5:30pm on Saturday, September 16th, 2023. It was intended for beginner students of all ages who aspire to have careers in audio production and post-production. Participating students attended four of six classes held throughout the day, followed by a professional audio industry panel discussion about careers in audio. Lunch was included and during the lunch break we heard a great presentation from keynote speaker, Christy Todd, the 2024 Teacher of the Year from Fayette County Public Schools. She shared inspirational news about initiatives in Georgia to train younger students for technical careers that will help meet the demands of the growing industry here. Throughout the day there were educational sponsor tables with representatives to talk with from Blackbird Academy, Georgia State University, Georgia Tech, Georgia Film Academy, SAE, SCAD, and Tweed Recording. The six classes covered fundamental topics necessary for a solid foundation in the audio field and were all supported by AES@CEC high school student members. The excellent classes included: DAW Fundamentals taught by Greg Gause (GA Film Academy), Microphone Fundamentals co-taught by Ben Yonas (Georgia State University) and Tim Jones (Found + Lost), Live Sound Reinforcement System Fundamentals co-taught by Thomas Martino (The Earl) and Paul Hammock (LaGrange College), Radio Frequency Wireless Microphone Fundamentals taught by Jamie Criswell (Sennheiser), Critical Listening taught by Joey Stuckey (Shadow Sound Studio), and Television and Film Mic'ing Fundamentals taught by Jameul Dye (DyeInk). Students won raffled prizes from the generous sponsors including two sets of Shure headphones, Sweetwater and Vintage King gift cards, a Sennheiser USB microphone, and a UA Volt Bundle.
