Measurements of recorded level and channel separation using standard optical methods or by means of phonograph cartridges yield only approximate values. In the case of cartridge measurements, groove deformation as well as cartridge crosstalk characteristics further influence the results. A technique using dual-beam interferometry to yield high orders of accuracy in determining recorded levels and channel separation in stereo discs is described.
