Location
The Schloss Elmau is located in an Alpine valley on the German / Austrian border 100 km south of Munich. Despite its remote location, it is easily reached, lying between the two major international airport terminals of Munich and Innsbruck. There is a good rail service to the area from both cities.
Directions from Munich / Germany:
by train: from Munich airport take the S-Bahn to Munich Hauptbahnhof. Trains leave about every full hour from the Starnberger Bahnhof Section of Munich Hauptbahnhof to KLAIS (next stop after Garmisch-Partenkirchen). Every IC train stops at Klais. The journey is approximately 2 hours. A train ticket is approximately DM 40.
by car: From Munich take the highway to Garmisch-Partenkirchen then continue in the direction of Innsbruck (Austria) for 12km. Take the exit to the village Klais, turn right into the village crossing the railway and then turn left at the Chapel into the Elmau Road, which is a toll road. The journey takes about 1 1/2hr from the airport. (130km)
by taxi: A taxi ride should cost approximately DM 250.
Directions from Innsbruck / Austria:
by train: from Innsbruck airport take the train to Mittenwald. Change at Mittenwald for a train to Klais. The journey is approximately 45 mins.
by car: Take the road to Zirlerberg and carry on to Mittenwald (in the direction of Garmisch-Partenkirchen). After passing Mittenwald you reach the village of Klais. Turn left crossing the railway. Then right, then turn left at the Chapel into the Elmau road. The journey takes about 45 Minutes. (50km)
by taxi: A taxi ride should cost approximately DM 100.
