AES 144 Meet The Judges! Peter Swann

AES 144 Meet The Judges! Peter Swann

Peter Swann built his first console as a high school student in 1980, and has been passionate about the art of audio ever since.  After 20 years of studio ownership in the analog and digital worlds, he found himself still searching for devices that could create the tone he craved.

In 2017, he formally launched Useful Arts Audio.  Useful Arts was born out of an aesthetic quest for vibrant, living sound straight from the source — not merely a technically clean sound that needs enhancement after enhancement to excite the listener.
Useful Arts designs and manufactures truly compromise-free products, using only the best components hand-assembled into inspiring products from innovative designs.  With a philosophical emphasis on the interplay between electrical artifacts and the subjective listening experience, Useful Arts seeks to optimize – not eliminate – the effects of tubes and transformers on the sonic result.
Through Useful Arts, Peter has created and distributes the SFP-60 Microphone Preamplifier, the BF-1 stage instrument preamp/DI and the BF-S PRO DI studio instrument interface.  The SFP-60 includes a unique “color” control that allows the engineer to blend in variable amounts of second harmonic distortion to compliment the signal source.
A passionate supporter of the 21st century manufacturing renaissance, Peter also consults with other professional audio designers to help them bring their concepts to life in metal, silicon and glass.

AES 144 Meet The Judges! Wolfgang Klippel

AES 144 Meet The Judges! Wolfgang Klippel

Wolfgang Klippel studied electrical engineering at the University of Technology in Dresden, in

the former East Germany, where his initial studies focused on speech recognition. Afterwards, he
joined a loudspeaker company in the eastern part of Germany where he was engaged in
transducer modelling, acoustic measurement and psychoacoustics. He later returned to his
studies and received a Ph.D in Technical Acoustics in 1987.
After spending a post-doctoral year at the Audio Research Group in Waterloo, Canada and
working at Harman/JBL in Northridge, CA, he returned to Dresden in 1997 and founded Klippel
GmbH, a company that develops novel control and measurement systems dedicated to
loudspeakers and other transducers.
Dr. Klippel has also been engaged as Professor of Electro-acoustics at the University of
Technology in Dresden since 2007. His papers and tutorials on loudspeaker modeling and
measurement – particulary those on large signal behaviour and physical distortion mechanisms –
are considered reference works in the field.

AES 144 Meet the Sponsors! Leapwing Audio

AES 144 Meet the Sponsors! Leapwing Audio

We love analog and we love digital. We also recognise that there are things you can’t do in the analog domain and understand that focus is key. You will not find us creating analog imitations. There are other companies that do this very well. We want to solely focus on tools that use the strength of digital to shape and improve sound.

We are geeks but also end-users. We don’t want to build complicated tools, where it takes a user 10 minutes to get a decent sound. Our goal is that once you open our tools, that within 10 seconds, you understand what it does and you get a great sound within the next 10 seconds.

We have a clear dedication to build something that’s easy to use and intuitive.

We pride ourselves to focus on only using the highest quality filters and algorithms we can come up with, knowing the current boundaries of modern-day CPUs. We might spend weeks getting filters to sound just the way we want. We also strongly believe that our paying customers should not be our beta testers so we’ve set up a very strong testing and debugging framework to make sure our plugins leave here in the best possible condition.
