Online Competition for All AES Student Members!

The Audio Engineering Society's Student Delegate Assembly is updating the Student Recording and Design Competitions for the 148th AES Convention following the cancellation of the in-person aspects of the Convention due to the COVID-19 pandemic. As it will be impossible to host our regular student competitions, the Student Delegate Assembly has adapted the competitions to be completely online as a component of a virtualized Convention Technical Program.

For the Student Recording Competition, the category rules will remain the same as published. The submission deadline is April 27. Registration for the online AES 148th Virtual Convention (at a modest registration fee of $25. USD) is required prior to competition judging. The online registration portal will be activated prior to the submission deadline. More details about the online finals will be coming soon. The SDA strongly encourages every student entering the competition to read the entirety of the rules, even if the student has entered in the past as many rules have changed. The full outline of the rules can be found here: http://www.aes.org/students/awards/recording/. Any questions or concerns can be directed to the Student Delegate Assembly by email.

For the Student Design Competition, the projects will be judged in an online format and finalists will be chosen through that medium. Deadlines and registration are identical to the Recording Competition, as detailed above. The SDA strongly encourages every student entering the competition to read the entirety of the rules, even if the student has entered in the past as many rules have changed. The full outline of the rules can be found here: http://www.aes.org/students/awards/design/. Any questions or concerns can be directed to the Student Delegate Assembly by email.

The SDA is excited to see all of the online submissions! We hope everyone is staying safe and healthy at home.

— The Audio Engineering Society provided two packed days of training and education for house of worship technical ministry staff on audio and production technologies and applications —

The Audio Engineering Society, the AES Nashville Section and Belmont University hosted house of worship technical ministry staff from near 50 churches for the first-ever AES Worship Sound Academy. Held March 10 and 11 in the impressive Johnson Center at Belmont in Nashville, a line-up of industry experts dug deep into the core technologies being used in modern worship, including mixing FOH and monitors, personal monitoring, miking, wireless systems, streaming, podcasting, recording, acoustics, system optimization and more. Audio theory and its specific application to the worship space were covered in a dozen sessions, delivering both foundational knowledge and a plethora of actionable guidelines and recommendations that the attendees were eager to apply to improve the use of technology in support of their home church’s ministry.

Worship Sound Academy attendees came loaded with questions and a host of issues to address and departed with new understanding of the technical solutions available to meet their needs. Along with the willingness of the presenters to share their combined decades of experience, technical partners filled an exhibition space where they also answered the attendees’ questions, providing insights into their gear and its application. Those technical partners, representing influential manufacturers and service providers, deeply involved in support of houses of worship, were Alclair Audio, Allen & Heath, Bosch-Electrovoice-Dynacord, d&b audiotechnik, DiGiCo, DPA Microphones, JH Audio, Lawo, QSC, Riedel, Shure, Simply Sound Acoustics, Solotech and key partner Waves. Additional supporters of the program content were Essential Audio and Spectrum Sound of Nashville, along with local worship team members.

The AES Worship Sound Academy provided worship tech team members an unprecedented chance to listen, learn and connect with industry professionals and the opportunity to network with peers that share their challenges and goals.

The AES Welcomes Glenn Lorbecki to the Position of Treasurer

Audio Engineering Society Treasurer Glenn Lorbecki

Audio Engineering Society Treasurer Glenn Lorbecki

Audio Engineering Society President Agnieszka Roginska has announced that Glenn Lorbecki has agreed to serve as the Society’s Treasurer, effective February 16. “Glenn Lorbecki has steadfastly served the AES on our Financial Planning Committee for several years,” said Roginska. “His service has been exemplary and is evidenced by numerous refinements in the AES’s financial workflow and reporting. He assumes the role of Treasurer with an intimate knowledge of the Society’s finances and we are delighted that he has once again stepped forward to share his expertise.” Lorbecki is replacing Richard Wollrich, who has resigned as AES Treasurer.

“On behalf of the entire AES, I want to thank Richard Wollrich for his dedicated service to the Society,” said Roginska. “The time and energy he gave to the AES in the capacity of Treasurer was simply extraordinary. He pushed us to implement new processes and procedures, instituted robust registration tracking and data analysis and brought an expanded level of corporate knowledge to the position. We are very grateful.”

The AES Board of Directors voted unanimously to approve Lorbecki’s appointment. He will serve as Treasurer through the 2020 election and one-year term of office of a Treasurer-Elect.

Lorbecki joined the AES in 1988 and has served as a member of the Financial Planning Committee since 2015, most recently as Chair of the FPC. His expertise in fiscal management stems from his 20-plus years’ business experience as president of the recording/video post-production company Glenn Sound, Inc., and his service since 1999 to the Recording Academy as PNW Chapter President, as a member of TV and Technology Committees, as Co-Chair (with Bob Ludwig) of the Producers and Engineers Wing and as national Secretary/Treasurer for four years. As chair of the Recording Academy Finance Committee, he led oversight of the GRAMMY® parent company from budgeting to audits, business development, compensation, legal issues, growth planning, real estate acquisition, charitable giving, and the sustained growth of their endowment fund.

A producer, engineer, composer, musician, studio owner and educator, Lorbecki established his career with such diverse artists as the Violent Femmes, Dizzy Gillespie, Dr. John, the White Stripes, Dave Matthews, Regina Spektor, Green Day, Weezer and Coldplay. Collaborations with MTV, Clear Channel, CBS, PBS, ABC, etc. have yielded numerous features, live-in-the-studio recordings, film scores and game soundtracks. He is part of the EMMY® and TEC award-winning GRAMMY telecast audio team on CBS, and his work is on permanent exhibit at the GRAMMY Museum in Los Angeles.

AES Show Hits a Hip-Hop and R&B Beat with Sessions Featuring the Music of Run the Jewels, Black Music Roundtable Special Event, and More

Shown L - R, Featured AES Show Fall 2020 Convention Hip-Hop and R&B Track Presenters Joey Raia and John Kercy

Shown L - R, Featured AES Show Fall 2020 Convention Hip-Hop and R&B Track Presenters Joey Raia and John Kercy

— Sessions at this year’s AES Show highlight some of the biggest names in the R&B and hip-hop world, with an eye on cultural awareness and opportunities for BIPOC artists, producers, and engineers —

The upcoming AES Show Fall 2020 Convention will continue to break new ground for AES events as this year’s presentation formats and programming offer innovative opportunities for all attendees. This year the Hip-Hop and R&B track, led by co-chairs Armand Jennings and Paul “Willie Green” Womack, returns for a second year with a powerhouse program highlighting the audio engineering and production insights, artistry, and gear behind some of the biggest artists in the genres. From the mixing of Run the Jewels’ latest release RTJ4, to the feature Black Music Roundtable event, the AES Show will take on hot topics and recordings in Hip-Hop and R&B today, while offering unprecedented worldwide Convention access via livestreamed and on-demand content at AESShow.com.

“After the success of the inaugural Hip-Hop and R&B Track in 2019,” says Track and Convention co-chair Womack, “we were eager to pursue an even more ambitious, entertaining and enthralling program for 2020, all while providing compelling education and inspiration. We’ve achieved those goals, in spite of the pandemic’s impact on the Convention, and are excited to share a slate of programming focused on the creative, technical and social needs of engineers in the modern Hip-Hop and R&B worlds.”

Black music is essential to the music, film, and TV industries. While 2020 has proven to be a landmark year in the struggle for social justice in America, how that will affect the entertainment industry is yet to be determined. The AES Show 2020 Black Music Roundtable event will examine how the current shift in cultural awareness impacts opportunities for BIPOC artists, engineers, and producers in the industry. Moderated by Paul “Willie Green” Womack, this roundtable discussion will feature insight from industry veterans including Prince Charles Alexander (GRAMMY Award-winning producer/engineer and professor at Berklee College of Music), Leslie Gaston-Bird (Audio Engineer, Governor at Large – Audio Engineering Society), Jeriel Johnson (Exec. Director – Recording Academy [Washington D.C. Chapter]), and Carolyn Malachi (GRAMMY-nominated artist/songwriter, engineer, and professor at Howard University).

Run the Jewels is one of the biggest names in hip-hop at the moment, with the GRAMMY-nominated duo blending dynamic beats and musical elements with their own vocal stylings and social commentary for a hard-hitting sound that leaves an impact on the listener. The session “Legend Has it: Mixing Run the Jewels with Joey Raia” will take a deep dive into mixing Run the Jewels’ recent release, RTJ4, with a focus on Raia's approach to the group's aggressive sound, and his hybrid mixing setup.

Other featured events in this year’s Hip-Hop and R&B events cover a broad spectrum of topics, from getting your sound to getting paid. “The Sauce – Exploring Vocal Treatments for Modern R&B with John Kercy” will explore modern vocal effects through the lens of four-time GRAMMY-nominated artist Lucky Daye’s acclaimed album, Painted. Further stressing the importance of keeping an organized and professional approach to presenting a final product, “Deliverables – What To Do When You've Finished the Mix with Ken ‘Duro’ Ifill” will educate attendees on exactly what assets you need to professionally deliver a mix.

Additional information and upcoming announcements on the Hip-Hop and R&B track events at the virtual AES Show Fall Convention, as well as for the whole “Audio Engineering Month” of October, are available at AESShow.com. Early Bird registration rates end August 31.
