A Perceptive Loudness-Sensitive Leveler for Audio Broadcasting and Mastering

Authors: Neoran, Itai; Shashua, Meir

AES Convention 105 · Paper 4852 · September 1998

Abstract

A leveler is a real-time device that uses automatic gain control (AGC) to reduce the dynamic range of an audio signal. A special leveler has been designed, where the reference level is the perceptive loudness estimation using equal-loudness contours. Automatic manipulations of the AGC's time constants, derived by content measurements, make it possible to avoid typical leveling artifacts.
