AB - The telecommunications and audio industries use nonlinear processors, such as data reduction, for which conventional measurements do not provide an adequate assessment. Perception based measurements have been proposed by the author and others. Factors (other than audio quality) that influence subjective opinion are discussed together with a proposal for a quality index which is independent of them.
