Convention Paper

A Physiological Ear Model for Auditory Masking Applicable to Perceptual Coding

Authors: Baumgarte, Frank

AES Convention 103 · Paper 4511 · September 1997

Abstract

The developed ear model covers an increased number of known masking effects compared to psychoacoustical models used so far in perceptual audio coders. It comprises a cochlear model which shows the same frequency selectivity and nonlinear behavior as observed from basilar membrane motion of the mammalian cochlea. The generated masked thresholds closely match classical psychoacoustics in terms of temporal and spectral masking.
