AB - Despite tremendous increases in computational power per dollar, most classical signal processing algorithms still require more calculation that is practical to allow their implementation in a commercial realtime multichannel instrument. Hence the goal of the electronic musical instrument designer moves beyond the selection of a known algorithm to finding tradeoffs which will only marginally detract from audio quality while allowing cost effective implementation.: Analysis of existing products shows both successes and failures in this task. This in turn indicates what approach to take in considering the future of commercial electronic musical instrument design.
