AES Convention 59 · Paper 1318 · February 1978

Abstract

A compander automatic dynamic range expansion system was newly developed with level dependent emphasis circuits based on auditory characteristics to make noise reduction more effective. Even if it is used for compact cassette tape recorders, the "breathing effect" of the noise is scarcely heard. The "breathing effect" is a nuisance phenomenon for companders that the noise level becomes higher and lower as the music level varies.
