Abstract

In 2001, the AES Technical Committee on Coding of Audio Signals produced the legendary educational CD-ROM “Perceptual Audio Coders –What To Listen For.” It contains a taxonomy of common types of codec artifacts and tutorial information on the background of each one. Example audio signals with different degrees of impairment illustrate the nature of the artifacts and help in training test listeners’ expertise. Since its initial release, several generations of CD-ROMs have been sold, and the material has found worldwide use for the education of the public. This paper presents the comprehensive second edition of the tutorial, based on the Technical Committee’s efforts in producing a next-generation educational package. It covers an extended range of coding artifact types that can be typically experienced with classic and advanced audio coder processing (e.g., bandwidth extension or parametric stereo). The paper provides the theoretical background for coding artifacts and educates readers on subjective quality evaluation. The enhanced format of the tutorial allows for seamless display and playback on PCs, tablets and mobile phones and includes interactive graphical elements. This attractive educational package is available freely on the web.
