The Solid-State “Rotary” Speaker

Journal of the Audio Engineering Society · Volume 74 · Issue 9 · pp. 681–687 · September 2026

Abstract

This article presents the proof of concept for a novel solid-state “rotary” speaker. The device uses a circular array of speakers instead of moving parts to achieve sound modulation. For this, the signal is translated across the array electronically rather than mechanically. Inspired by the original Leslie speaker, this novel concept represents a new paradigm in instrument amplification and sound effects, capable of modulating physical sound waves outside the electronic and digital signal chains and without any moving parts. The authors present the working principle of their device and its technical implementation and demonstrate functionality using test and instrument signals.
