A Layered Approach for In-Car Sound Personalization
2026 AES 6th International Automotive Audio Conference · Paper 6 · July 2026
Abstract
Automotive audio systems are normally tuned for listeners with broadly normal hearing, although many drivers and passengers have age-related threshold elevation, noise-exposure history, mild hearing loss, or suprathreshold listening difficulty. Even mild hearing loss can reduce access to spectral detail, musical nuance, and dialogue clarity, so the listener may not experience the full benefit of a carefully tuned in-car system. Alango has developed and implemented a layered strategy for hearing-aware sound personalization in cars. The strategy is designed for deployment on existing automotive audio architectures and can be entered through three routes: an age-based preset, a hearing-test or audiogram-based profile, and a Best Sound Point (BSP) preference interface. BSP can operate as a standalone personalization method when demographic or hearing-test information is unavailable, or it can be applied on top of age- or audiogram-based tuning for fine adjustment. In the current prototype, BSP coordinates are translated into updated multiband dynamic-range processing (MDRP) profiles and applied during looping playback, enabling controlled comparison of audibility, timbre, dynamics, comfort, and artifacts. The core platform is working and ready for integration trials; the remaining work is to optimize default parameters, user-interface flow, and OEM-specific tuning choices through user-experience studies in representative vehicles.
