Study of the influence of binaural recordings on the activation of the motor part of the brain
Express Paper · Paper 397 · October 2025
Abstract
The paper presents the assumptions and design of a study aimed at testing whether immersive audio recordings made using the binaural technique can induce activity in the motor cortex areas of the brain. The main hypothesis is the possibility of eliciting the imagination of movement and its neural representation in the listener in response to realistic soundscapes, even without performing actual physical activity. The inspiration for the project is the growing number of studies on the influence of music and sound on the brain and the noticeable lack of detailed analyses of the influence of binaural recordings on motor activity. The research methodology was planned based on the analysis of other studies. The experiment assumes recording the EEG signal while listening to specially prepared audio material in resting conditions. The participants of the study will be in a sitting position, with their eyes closed, not performing any cognitive or motor tasks, which will allow obtaining data as close as possible to the situation of patients with limited motor activity, e.g. in a coma. The EEG signal analysis will focus on changes in the mu and beta rhythms, which are indicators of motor cortex activation. In order to obtain material for reliable analysis and comparisons, the audio file used in the study consists of three segments: a binaural recording of a walk in a realistic soundscape, a fragment of silence, and a piece of classical music in stereo.
