Mentorship: Building Inclusive Pathways
2025 Breaking Barriers in Audio · Paper 4 · March 2025
Abstract
This presentation examines the transformative impact of mentorship in advancing diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility (DEI) in education, with a focus on supporting underrepresented groups. Mentorship has been recognized as a critical driver of academic success and retention, particularly for students facing systemic barriers. Research highlights its role in fostering a strong sense of scientific identity, building essential support networks, and enhancing academic achievement.
The Lder del Maana (Leader of Tomorrow) program at Tec de Monterrey serves as a compelling case study in implementing effective mentorship strategies. This program provides full scholarships and comprehensive support to academically gifted students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds in Mexico. Central to its approach is mentorship, which guides mentees through the challenges of university life, strengthens their sense of belonging, and cultivates their potential as transformative leaders.
Key insights from this program demonstrate that structured and intentional mentoring practices significantly enhance, personal growth, and resilience among underrepresented students. This presentation will explore actionable strategies for embedding mentorship within DEI initiatives, focusing on how to create inclusive environments that empower diverse student populations to excel. By leveraging mentorship as a catalyst for social mobility and educational success, we can pave the way for a more equitable and innovative future in higher education.
