Abstract

Conventional methods for measuring Room Impulse Responses (RIRs) employing an omnidirectional microphone capture only the temporal properties of the sound evolution in acoustic spaces. Extended methods that measure the directional properties of room impulse responses in addition to the temporal evolution have been proposed and explored widely. In this paper we present a method for measuring Directional Room Impulse Responses (DRIRs) employing an acoustic intensity probe and a scheme that employs a rooms measured DRIR for binaural reproduction of sound to immerse a listener in a virtual reproduction of the room acoustics. We measured DRIRs with a commercial 3D sound intensity probe (Weles Acoustics WA301) containing x, y, z acoustic velocity channels in addition to a scalar pressure channel. We employed the measured DRIRs to predict the signals that would be measured by a binaural dummy head microphone with known Head Related Impulse Responses placed at the same location where the DRIR was measured. The predicted binaural signals are compared to measured binaural signals for a Neumann KU 100 Dummy Head Binaural Stereo Microphone. Accurate and efficient implementation of DRIRs for immersive sound reproduction may significantly enhance AR/VR and other spatial audio applications by providing listeners with room-specific directional cues that include realistic early room reflections and the detailed evolution of the diffuse reverberant acoustic field.
