Choristers intonation accuracy in different monitoring conditions: speaker, open headphones, closed headphones
Express Paper · Paper 234 · June 2024
Abstract
Correct intonation of musicians singing in a choir is the basis of the ensemble's sound quality. In this study, an analysis of the choristers' intonation under different listening conditions, which may be applicable in the case of studio choir recordings, was conducted: speaker monitoring, closed headphones monitoring, and open headphones monitoring. The conducted study included the analysis of sounds sung by the choristers - the perfect fifth to the heard reference sound and the complementary major third relative to the reference sounds forming a perfect fifth. The study involved the spectral analysis of the choristers' singing, particularly the analysis of the fundamental frequency and intonation errors. The highest intonation error values were observed for speaker monitoring (20 cents), the lowest values occurred for open headphones (17 cents), and for closed headphones monitoring, the error was 18 cents.
