Convention Paper

The Synthesizer in Popular Music: Some Problems and Solutions

Authors: Gleeson, Pat; Vieira, John

AES Convention 42 · Paper 848 · May 1972

Abstract

In recent years, the articles and papers on the synthesizer have dealt mostly with the technology of design, rather than with either the philosophy of design or its usefulness. The latter is the subject of this paper. We will consider some limitations of the present studio synthesizers, and will suggest some ways in which these limitations may be overcome, not by extensive redesign, but by simple modification and, more importantly, by a more appropriate use of the instrument as it exists today.
