Convention Paper
Subwoofer Loudspeaker System with Dynamic Push-Pull Drive
AES Convention 126 · Paper 7686 · May 2009
Abstract
This engineering report examines the influence of mutual coupling between two driver-diaphragms driven by two electrical signals, each with a 90° phase shift on the voice-coil impedance curve. A new model of the system is described, and the effects are observed using the electrical circuit simulator PSpice. Finally, predicted and measured values are presented. The dynamic push-pull drive concept was introduced in 2005 [1]. Two bass drive units, w1 and w2, are built into a common enclosure and remain acoustically coupled via the internal space. The drive units are arranged in a push-pull configuration and driven by two similar amplifiers opposite in phase (with respect to the chamber, in order to maintain the chamber in a substantially constant-pressure state). The original sound signal Vi is fed to the input to one of the amplifiers, while the differentiated value d/dt[Vi(t)] is fed to the other amplifier using a differential circuit at the input (Fig. 1).
