AB - Acoustic intensity is the mechanical energy stream through a point in the sound field. In the far field, it also identifies the direction of the main source (when there is one), but it remains seemingly a neglected data in multichannel recording and reproduction systems. This paper describes the information contained in sound intensity, how it can be used, what can be expected from it, and it underlines the fact that this data is accessible in the frequency domain through any existing cardioid recording system, such as ambisonic or double MS.
