Distribution of multichannel audio for digital television creates significant challenges. One solution that enables transport of eight audio channels over the existing two-channel infrastructure is the Dolby E bit-rate reduction coding system. This paper examines novel coding tools that are necessary for the realization of this system. In particular, the adaptive transform structure, latency issues, efficient quantization method, and splicing techniques are explored.:
