A measured head-related transfer function can be decomposed into a minimum-phase, a linear-phase, and an all-pass component. The audibility of the all-pass component is tested in a three alternative, forced choice experiment. Results show that a pair of head-related transfer functions can be represented by its minimum-phase components if the appropriate interaural time difference is applied. The interaural time difference is found as the inaural group delay difference at 0 Hz, which is determined from the excess phase (linear-phase and all-pass) components.:
