AB - A listening experiment was conducted to study the audibility of variation of decay parameters in plucked string synthesis. A digital commuted-waveguide-synthesis model was used to generate the test sounds. The decay of each tone was parameterized with an overall and a frequency-dependent decay parameter. Two different fundamental frequencies, tone durations and types of excitation signals were used, totaling eight test sets for both parameters. The results indicate that variations between 25% and 40% in the time constant of decay are inaudible. This suggests that large deviations in decay parameters can be allowed from a perceptual viewpoint. The results are applied to model-based audio processing.:
