A study of the vibration resonances of a common titanium diaphragm is presented. The diaphragm geometry description is followed by predictions of the natural frequencies and mode shapes using the finite element method. Estimates, using linear mode superposition, of the steady state velocity response that results from a harmonic coil force are then shown. Experimental verification of the transient and steady state vibration response, including operating deflection shapes, is accomplished with the use of a laser velocimeter. Discussion of the energy loss mechanisms is provided to assist understanding of the ringing associated with lightly damped vibration resonances.
