A new method is proposed for the evaluation of nonlinear distortion of audio amplifiers, reproducing real musical signals. Output voltage and current are acquired and stored, for a comparatively large time segment. A close investigation of the resulting V-1 graph, by means of probability density function, provides an objective measure of amplifier`s non linear state. Provided that a distortion probability value with inaudible results has been determined, such a measure can lead to a flexible estimate of maximum power ratings.
