Placing a microphone in the near field of a port or driver can lead to significant errors in measurements. Inertial effects of the air flow modify the microphone output, depending on the configuration, resulting in behavior which we classify as global and local: Bernouli and stagnation effects. Measurements and calculations lead to conclusions regarding recommended microphone placement, critical levels of air velocity, benefits of windscreens, signal phase shifts, and the nature of errors.
