Assessment of 4-2-4 and 5-2-5 Surround Sound Matrix Systems

The paper reports the results of listening tests conducted, which compared the performance of three matrix systems (Circle Surround 5-2-5, Dolby Surround 4-2-4, Lexicon Surround 5-2-5) with respect to two-channel transmission/recording of five-channel 3/2-stereo material. The tests included the assessment of downward compatibility (two-channel stereo) as well as backward compatibility with Pro Logic decoding. Results discussed in the paper consider two aspects: first, the means for handling archive Dolby Stereo material within the surround sound MPEG-2 world; and second, options where specific matrix decoding can be facilitated at the same time as discrete high-quality MPEG-2 broadcasting services. It is suggested that a special static compatibility matrix be introduced into the MPEG-2 encoding process.
