A leveler is a real-time device that uses automatic gain control (AGC) to reduce the dynamic range of an audio signal. A special leveler has been designed, where the reference level is the perceptive loudness estimation using equal-loudness contours. Automatic manipulations of the AGC`s time constants, derived by content measurements, make it possible to avoid typical leveling artifacts.
