Television Postproduction Using Compressed Formats and Distributed Software Components on Standard Information Technology (IT) Platforms

Bit-rate reduction of video signals has made the storage and processing of digital television feasible on standard IT platforms. This in turn offers new flexibility and economic benefits in audio/video production systems. This paper describes some of the technical consequences of this development and outlines a prototype audio/video production system based on a network of standard IT workstations. The key subject of system interfaces is discussed together with standardization activity in this area.
