Dolby Surround Systems in Cars

Poor stereo imaging is a concept-based problem that is inherent in car audio systems that use normal two-channel stereo reproduction. The main reason for this problem is that the listeners are located closer to one of the stereo channel`s loudspeakers than the other. This causes the center of the stereo image to appear at the same place as the closest loudspeaker. This paper describes a method for adjusting the stereo image so that the center image is in front of each front seat passenger. This is accomplished by introducing a center loudspeaker and a Dolby Surround Pro Logic decoder modified for in-car use.
