Spatial Frequency Response Surfaces (SFR`s): An Alternative Visualization and Interpolation Technique for Head-Related Transfer Functions (HRTF`s)

This paper introduces Spatial Frequency Response Surfaces (SFRSs), an alternative spatial-domain visualization tool for head-related transfer functions (HRTFs). Qualitative analysis of SFRSs is easier than direct comparison of HRTF magnitude responses and it reveals many cross-subject similarities in HRTF data corresponding to well-known HRTF-related psychophysical phenomena. The paper presents an SFRS-based HRTF interpolation algorithm and the results of a psychophysical experiment that compare the perceptual quality of interpolated and noninterpolated HRTFs.
