As part of a major research initiative called The Music Library of the Future, a suite of software tools for preparing and delivering audio and MIDI files over the World Wide Web (WWW) has been developed. The motivation is that long music and audio passages must be either pre-edited into separate files and stored on the server or, alternatively, shipped complete to the end user for local segmentation. The first approach results in overly cluttered file systems and the second results in very long download times. Our solution is to store a single complete copy of the audio or MIDI data and provide the end user with access to segments indicated by logical names.
