The extensive use of perceptual codecs will be characteristic of future audio networks. Depending on the systems and bit rates employed, the final sound quality may decrease seriously with multiple generations. Perceptual measurement techniques, such as NMR, have proven to be a valuable tool in assessing bit rate reduced signals. This paper investigates how perceptual measurement systems are suitable to aid the network design. Results are reported, and some constraints in the use of perceptual measurements are discussed.
