The wave field synthesis method is applied to achieve natural reproduction of sound in living rooms, cinemas, and theaters. The approach gives a much larger listening area, with correct virtual directions and spatial impression, than can be obtained with conventional reproduction principles. A recording and reproduction strategy is presented that allows for a wave field synthesis based on a limited number of transmission channels.
