Effects of Headphone Placement on Headphone Equalization for Binaural Reproduction

Accurate reproduction of binaural recorded material is only possible if the headphones used for reproduction are correctly equalized. In this investigation two types of headphones, circumaural and intraaural, were examined with particular interest focused on the variation in their transfer characteristics for various different placement positions on a dummy-head microphone system. Results indicate that intraaural headphones have a more robust transfer characteristic than circumaural headphones and may be more suitable for binaural reproduction.
