The use of noise-shaping techniques in A/D and D/A converters is well understood and covered extensively in the literature. These same techniques can be applied to the modulation of time intervals in the generation of a sampling clock. When combined with an interpolation or decimation filter, noise-shaped clock signals allow for the interpolation/decimation ratio to be continuously variable. This allows the use of a fixed high-frequency master clock to operate the interpolator/decimator with no required relationship to the baseband sample clock.
