Virtual Reality by Sound Reproduction Based on Wave Field Synthesis

The wave field synthesis method is combined with the principle of focusing to generate a sound field that originates from a point in front of the synthesis array of loudspeakers. Simulations and test results are presented to show the potential of the method. Using this principle, an acoustic virtual reality can be obtained which goes far beyond the reproduction of sources that are situated behind the loudspeaker array, especially when the position of the synthesized sources are being altered dynamically as well.
