The influence of room modes on low-frequency responses is discussed. A method by which some low-frequency -figure of merit- can be calculated for rooms of different shapes is presented. The method leads to a range of practical, near-optimum room shapes, without constraints implicit in a limited set of -golden ratio- criteria. The results have been incorporated into some international standards.
