Proposed digital surround sound systems for the consumer market are currently based on a 5.1-channel configuration: left, center, right, left surround, right surround, and a low-frequency enhancement channel. In the movie theater world, a 7.1-channel configuration, with additional left center and right center channels, is becoming popular due to its more stable frontal stereo image. A 7.1-channel augmentation to MPEG-2 audio is presented, which is compatible with 5.1-channel and 2-channel MPEG audio decoders.
