AB - This paper considers time domain, predictive and frequency domain, transform data compression techniques, and the issues relating to coding delay, multiple and tandem coding, bandwidth and S/N limitations. The apt-X100 is a well-established 4:1 algorithm adopting the predictive approach, and it is now joined by apt-Q, a new revolutionary transform scalable algorithm extending the compression boundaries yet further with two practical implementations at 12:1 and 20:1. A knowledge of the advantages and the limitations of data compression makes choosing the best solution less problematical.
