Compatible Multichannel Audio Coding Techniques for DVB

Widescreen television with multichannel sound is quickly gaining popularity, but the majority of users will stay with monophonic or stereo reproduction. Stereo compatibility is, therefore, a strict requirement. This can be achieved either by simulcast or by matrixing. This paper discusses different matrixing options as well as other requirements, such as dynamic range compression, multilingual, and low complexity.
