The BBC has produced several multichannel sound mixes over the last few years, in order to experiment with this form of sound presentation. This paper outlines some of the problems encountered in this work and provides a conclusion regarding the quality of sound presentation that can be achieved. Results of tests on low bit-rate coding systems for multichannel sound are also discussed.
