The developed ear model covers an increased number of known masking effects compared to psychoacoustical models used so far in perceptual audio coders. It comprises a cochlear model which shows the same frequency selectivity and nonlinear behavior as observed from basilar membrane motion of the mammalian cochlea. The generated masked thresholds closely match classical psychoacoustics in terms of temporal and spectral masking.
