Towards a Digitally Interfaced Microphone Standard

As digital techniques become pervasive in the audio industry, it is inevitable that digitally interfaced microphones will appear. The major attraction is to digitize the analog output from the microphone capsule as soon as possible, allowing the remainder of the signal transmission and processing tasks to be done in the digital domain. For this concept to be a success, it is vital that an industry-wide standard is adopted for the digital interface. This paper explores many of the options involved in digitally interfacing microphones, and is a call to the audio industry for participation in the standard setting process.
