Sound diffusers for spaces such as auditoria and listening rooms have to satisfy both acoustical and visual requirements. To broaden the palette of surfaces available to designers, an investigation of the acoustical performance of fractal diffusers has been undertaken. In addition to defining the acoustical effectiveness of fractal surfaces, this paper will discuss how optimization techniques can enhance performance.
