Subjective Audio Testing Methodology and Human Performance Factors

The ITU-R Recommendation BS.1116 provides an important standard for the conduct of tests subjectively assessing high-quality audio coders. Nonetheless, a review of some results from psychophysics and human factors engineering in this paper suggests various refinements that could adapt the methodology to better match human capabilities. In addition, an alternative analysis of gain gathered under BS.1116 methodology is discussed, using signal detection theory to gain several theoretical advantages.
