This tutorial paper reviews the process of instrumentation and measurement as applied to the acoustic and electroacoustic elements of audio systems. The dynamic nature of audio system components is shown to motivate the application of frequency domain techniques. These methods impose measurement bandwidth and frequency resolution constraints when practically implemented on digital instrumentation. The difficulties of isolating the performance of electroacoustic transducers from their acoustic environment are discussed and the limitations introduced by spatially sampling an acoustic field by single point microphone measurements are considered.
