The increasing demand for higher signal-to-noise ratio in audio reproduction combined with the use of narrow trackwidths and lower tape speeds make it necessary to use very low noise amplifiers. In this paper, the different types of noise found in a head-amplifier combination will be described. The different types of tape noise will not be included.
