This paper describes techniques of creating an illusion of sound source distance using digital signal processing techniques, by adjusting the precise timing and amplitude gains of simulated early reflections. Using a hypothesis for the psychoacoustic mechanism of distance perception of Peter Craven, it is shown that simulating appropriate subjective cues, rather than simulating actual rooms, can give more reliable and controllable results with a much lower processing complexity when a large multiplicity of sources must be mixed and each given their own distance.
