There has been much speculation concerning the audibility of phase and in particular its effect on the sound quality of equalizers. Are the perceived differences between equalizers caused by differences in phase response? This research looks for answers to this question by testing the audibility of simulated group delay distortion. An audio signal is split into frequency bands and one band is delayed or advanced in time relative to the other while the amplitude (frequency) response is held flat. The effect of spectral precedence, a frequency-selective precedence, is evaluated.
